Mercurian Attack!

Fresh off the heels of the stunning news that the mercury levels in many fish are not, in fact, toxic to pregnant women, actor Jeremy Piven is leading a chorus of detractors.

Earlier this week came word of a draft report from the Food and Drug Administration that argues the health benefits of eating fish outweigh the potential ill effects of mercury. The Environmental Protection Agency basically lost its shit, calling the FDA study “scientifically flawed,” “inadequate” and an “oversimplification.”

Within days the Entourage star announces a convenient bout of mercury poisoning that is causing him to drop out of his critically panned role in the David Mamet play “Speed the Plow.”

Now, maybe this is soda-deprivation paranoia setting in, but I think that if we followed the money it would look something like this:

Fishing Lobby »$$$$» FDA
EPA »$$$$$$$» Jeremy Piven

Also, Variety has run some amazingly creative headlines about this. They are, respectively, “Jeremy Piven speeds to ‘Plow’ ” and “Jeremy Piven speeds from ‘Plow.’ “

I want to give them a cookie.
