Who’s the Prof?
![]() This is Tony Danza, not Tony Micelli |
I was just reading this article about the impact of the economic crisis on PhD students who are seeking jobs.
As with the article last month from the Chronicle of Higher Education, the moral of this story is that doctoral candidates are fucked sideways with a traffic cone.
Doesn’t it make you nostalgic for the good ol’ days when Tony Micelli was given a university professorship on Who’s the Boss? — even though he’s 50, even though his only work experience is as a houseboy, even though he has a dino-face?
I found a great website called The Who’s the Boss? Resource while I was checking to make sure I didn’t hallucinate that plot line. The story arc, which occurred in the eighth and final season of the show, ran through three episodes titled “Savor the Veal.” I’ve included TWTB’s summaries below.
Ep. 194. Savor the Veal I (b: 18-Apr-92 pc: 0822)
Tony has graduated from college and his job search is unfulfilling. He gets a letter from an Iowa university who wants him to teach there. The job sounds perfect for him, but he pretends he is not interested, because it’s so far from his home. Angela sees through his facade and convinces him to take the job.
ep. 195. Savor the Veal II (b: 25-Apr-92 pc: 0823)
With Tony living in Iowa, Angela and he take turns flying out to visit each other on the weekends. When this plan doesn’t work out, Angela agrees to move to Iowa to be with Tony.
ep 196. Savor the Veal III (b: 25-Apr-92 pc: 0824)
Angela attempts to adjust to her new life in Iowa, but discovers that she really wants to be back east, working at her agency. The conflict of professional interest threatens to split up Tony and Angela. Their relationship comes full circle with Tony again knocking on Angela’s front door.
